Tennessee Legislature passes HB 0317 which amends TCA Title 15 to make Juneteenth an official state holiday effective immediately.

Overview: Tennessee HB 0317, Juneteenth

On April 20, 2023, the Tennessee Legislature passed HB 0317 which changes the designation of June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, from a day of special observance to a legal holiday. The legislation amends TCA Title 15, Holidays, to include June 19th as a recognized holiday. This only impact employers with employees in Tennessee.

Title 15 notes that holidays listed within Title 15 impact all public offices and that they may be closed. The Title also notes that businesses of all character (private employers) may, at their discretion, choose to observe the holiday, but they are not required to do so.

Next Steps

Employers should evaluate if they want to include Juneteenth into their holiday calendar for Tennessee employees.
