Blake Dickens
Commercial Producer, HUB Mid-South
Blake Dickens has been in the insurance industry since 2014 when he joined Harris Madden & Powell Insurance in Memphis, Tennessee as a commercial lines producer. Before joining Harris Madden & Powell, he had 11 years of experience selling into the healthcare and construction industries which has helped him develop a focus for his insurance career. In March of 2020, HMP Insurance joined HUB. In that transition, he has continued as a producer and is working with Dan Hite (CSO) to help lead the MSO sales team as they continue to grow a new HUB region.
Blake is from the Memphis, TN area where he continues to live. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University where he received a degree from the College of Business. Early on in his career, his desire was to be in the golf business where Mississippi State offered their Professional Golf Management program. After working in the industry for a few years and realizing that many of the members work in the insurance industry, he got smart, got out and eventually found his way into insurance.
Blake is an active member of Grace Evangelical Church as well as on the board of The Grace Institute. Blake is the Insurance Chair for NAXSA (North American Excavation Shoring Association) where he has developed an insurance program for its members. He is also an active member of the local AGC chapter.
Most of Blake’s time away from work is spent with his family. He and his wife Jami are parents to a 7-year-old girl, Lyla, and a 6-year-old boy, Graham. When they aren’t watching coach pitch, dance, and basketball, etc., he enjoys playing golf, following a very average Mississippi State Football team and occasionally having a nice bourbon.
Getting to know Blake:
Q: What was the best piece of career advice you ever received?
A: I had a mentor tell me two things that have changed my career and life. First, He taught me how to keep a business journal every day that helps me focus on my goals, daily activity, and my attitude and beliefs. Second, he told me to do one thing daily that was uncomfortable or that I fear. By doing one thing daily that is uncomfortable, you will continue to grow in business and in life and achieve things that seemed impossible.
Q:What do you think is the best quality for a leader to possess? Why?
A: A desire to serve. Treating everyone as you would want to be treated. I believe that people want to follow a leader who puts others first. A leader must be able to cast a vision and help others understand the why behind the vision, but if that leader can't get in the trenches with his or her team to help and give the tools achieve that vision, I believe that success is going to be hard.
Q: If you weren’t working right now, what would you be doing?
A: Walking 9 holes on the par 3 course with my wife and kids.
