About the Program
Why UAV Insurance?
Currently, Transport Canada requires that all commercial UAV operators apply for an SFOC (Special Flight Operating Certificate) prior to commencing operations. Qualifying to operate under an exemption is extremely rare as a commercial operator (Qualifying for an exemption).
Liability Insurance is required in order to apply for an SFOC.
The regulatory landscape has changed significantly over the last 18 months. New regulations have been proposed and we expect them to be implemented in the first half of 2018. If you require further information about the current and upcoming regulations, please contact Brad Borle at 403-309-3770.
What are UAV?
Drones go by many names:
- UAV – Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
- UAS – Unmanned Aerial System
- RPAS – Remotely Piloted Aircraft system
Within Hub we will use the term UAV. Transport Canada uses the same term. Transport Canada classifies a UAV as an aircraft. Our program wording is therefore aviation based.
What is UAV Liability?
A type of aviation insurance for businesses and individuals that own (have a financial interest in the UAV) and operate UAV’s for business purposes.
DroneComplete Liability Insurance
- Bodily Injury – UAV strikes individual
- Property Damage – UAV strikes car/ building or equipment
- Personal Injury – Lawsuit arising from flying over private property.
- Coverage is limited to flying within Transport Canada regulations/guidelines.
- UAV liability only covers in flight operations.
- The coverage territory is Canada, however, we do have the ability to extend the liability to international operations but it must be pre-approved by underwriting.
- UAV Liability insurance does not replace a CGL policy that would cover the day to day operations of a commercial entity. E.g. Lawsuit arising from distribution of unauthorized images.
What is the Hull?
The Hull includes the UAV’s airframe and the payload. Payload is the equipment that is capable of enhancing the utility of the aerial component of a UAV system and/or attached to the airframe. Settlement on Hull Coverage is as follows: The lesser of the cost to repair damage, replace same make and model or the limit scheduled for the unit minus the deductible. This product was developed using a combination of the leading aviation wordings available. It is currently the most comprehensive and competitively priced product in North America. Where we excel is in our liability rating and our deductible structure on the hull coverage.
Who is Protected?
The individual, flight crew members or
business entity that owns and/or operates
the UAV.
