SOUTH VEHICLES: Insuring a vehicle you’re keeping outside Nunavut or the Northwest Territories
A South Vehicle refers to a vehicle that is stored in a southern province while the owner resides in Nunavut or the Northwest Territories. These vehicles are often used by the owner while they are visiting family or on vacation.
Most insurers will be reluctant to insure a vehicle if it is going to be located permanently outside the owner’s home territory. However, at HUB, we have an option we can offer to our clients that can be useful in such situations.
A South Vehicle Policy can be issued for cars and trucks being used outside Nunavut or the Northwest Territories. In order to qualify for this coverage, there are a few restrictions to be aware of:
Regardless of where your vehicle is being stored, it will need to be plated and registered in Nunavut or the Northwest Territories, depending on your territory of residence.
The insurer will allow for 180 days of use on-road throughout the year. This means that you’d keep yourcomprehensive coverage (fire, theft, vandalism) on year-round, and then we would add the on-road coverage (liability and collision) when you are travelling south and planning on driving.
Your vehicle will need to be parked on private property. This can be at a residence or at a storage facility.
These policies are intended as a solution for Nunavut residents who want to avoid the need for arranging car rentals or other transportation when travelling to a regular destination outside of Nunavut. It is important to note that the South Vehicle Policy is not intended for extended vehicle use. If you are going to school outside of Nunavut/Northwest Territories, let us know, coverage can be provided for continuing educational purposes.
If you currently own a South Vehicle or are considering purchasing one, please contact our office and a broker will be able to provide a quote and additional details.
