The MSBA has arranged for travel insurance to cover Students and Approved Chaperones travelling outside of Manitoba on School Division sanctioned trips/activities. Students must purchase the insurance while, Approved Chaperones are covered without cost under the MSBA Staff/Volunteer Out-of-Province Business Travel Health plan.
Any student travelling outside of Manitoba on a School Division sanctioned trip/activity is required to purchase travel insurance through the MSBA Student Travel Insurance plan, unless duplicate insurance coverage as specified below is in place elsewhere.
If the student has duplicate coverage you must obtain written proof that the coverage is for both emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation. If both are included, the student is not required to purchase coverage under the MSBA Student Travel Insurance plan. Note that you are not being asked to determine the adequacy of the student’s coverage, you are only confirming the student has both emergency medical and trip cancellation. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate coverage to meet their needs. Should the student declare to have duplicate coverage, MSBA and the School Division are not responsible for any claim incidents.
To be eligible for coverage under the MSBA Student Travel Insurance plans, students must:
- Be a Resident of Canada under 29 year of age
- Be insured under a provincial government health plan
- Be a student in full-time attendance in a School Division under the MSBA
If the student does not meet all of the above criteria coverage cannot be purchased under the MSBA plans. The student should be directed to contact HUB International at 1-866-756-3281 to investigate coverage options better suited to their situation.
Two coverage options, underwritten by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada, are available under the MSBA Student Travel plan:
- Option 1 - Ultimate Premier Travel Insurance with Trip Cancellation
- Option 2 - Emergency Medical Travel Insurance (no Trip Cancellation)
Coverage under the plans must be purchased prior to departure on the trip/activity.
Please note that both plans contain a pre-existing conditions exclusion. Medical conditions that are not stable and controlled in the 60 days prior to departure on the trip will not be covered. Students/parents should read their policy wording carefully to understand the coverage and ensure the stability requirements are met.
Immediately after purchasing the coverage, students will receive an email confirming the purchase and providing a printable Confirmation of Coverage, along with a policy brochure. The policy brochure contains the complete policy language including full details on the policy benefits, terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions.
Students should be directed to bring the Confirmation of Coverage as well as the policy brochure on the trip.
If a student requires medical treatment or needs assistance during a covered trip the travel assistance company must be contacted prior to receiving treatment. Emergency contact numbers are indicated in the Confirmation of Coverage.
