Peel & Holland, a division of HUB International Mid-South, was founded in 1924 and joined HUB International in 2022. Now serving Kentucky as HUB | Peel & Holland, we are a full-service agency providing property and casualty insurance, surety and bonding, family insurance, and employee benefits plans. We focus on a wide variety of industries, with significant expertise in public entity, marina, agriculture, education, construction, and healthcare. Our Kentucky-based team operates from seven regional offices, offering innovative risk management and insurance solutions for our clients in Murray, KY and across the Commonwealth.

In 1924, Dwight Peel founded an insurance agency in neighboring Marshall County, Kentucky and was later joined by partner Woodrow Holland in the late 1940’s. Their company then became known as Peel & Holland Insurance, proudly serving families and farm owners across Western Kentucky. R.C. Riley joined Peel & Holland in 1965 and eventually became President and owner of the agency. Along with several other partners, Riley led Peel & Holland’s continued growth until his retirement in 2005. Riley was instrumental in expanding the company’s scope of services as well as its geographic reach. During his tenure, Peel & Holland grew significantly, adding locations in Mayfield, Murray, and Paducah. During the 1990’s, Peel & Holland also expanded beyond Business and Family Insurance by launching its Employee Benefits and Public Entity Insurance divisions.

Meanwhile in Calloway County, local insurance agency Purdom Thurman was founded in 1956 by Pete Purdom and Bill Thurman. In 1983, the agency added an additional owner, Dan McNutt, thus becoming Purdom, Thurman and McNutt Insurance. Their office was located on the Murray downtown court square on Maple Street between the former locations of Hopkins Law Office and Ward Elkins. Ten years later, Dan McNutt purchased Purdom’s and Thurman’s shares of ownership, with his son Greg McNutt becoming a co-owner soon after. In 1994, the agency was re-named McNutt Insurance, and after 40 years at the Maple Street location, the business relocated nearby to South 5th Street. Their agency operated under that name until 2008 when they merged with Peel & Holland, combining their Murray offices.

On July 23, 2014, Peel & Holland’s office building was heavily damaged by a fire which impacted many downtown Murray businesses. While the Peel & Holland offices did not sustain direct fire damage, the structure was ruined by extensive water and smoke. In November 2014, it was determined that the building that housed Peel & Holland would not survive the damage incurred.

Despite many challenges, the company’s leadership team was intent on turning this unfortunate fire into an opportunity to better serve clients and the local community. In 2016, Peel & Holland announced its commitment to reinvest in downtown Murray with the purchase of five of the damaged properties. Soon after, complete reconstruction began on the corner of South 5th and Maple Street. Peel & Holland re-opened its doors on Murray’s downtown court square in March 2017, preserving history and continuing its service to Calloway County.

During many years of steady growth, Peel & Holland has become immersed in the Calloway County community. The company is widely known as a coveted employer, a strong advocate of local nonprofit organizations, an active member of the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce, and an avid Murray State University supporter. Peel & Holland is also recognized throughout Calloway County for its strong commitment to fostering local leadership by offering learning opportunities, internships, and support to programs dedicated to developing strong leaders among the community. In recent years, Peel & Holland received numerous Industry accolades including #1 Best Places to Work in Kentucky, Insurance Business America Top Insurance Employers, and Big I Best Practices Agency.
