You should consider such important aspects of collector automobile coverage as:
MILEAGE LIMITATIONS: Some insurance companies place mileage/usage limits on a policy. Often times these limitations defeat the purpose of owning and driving a collector.
LIABILITY LIMITS: Just because the vehicle isn’t driven as frequently as your regular use car doesn’t mean your personal assets are not at risk in the event of a serious accident. In addition, are you certain the limits are adequate for your personal umbrella policy? You don’t want a gap in coverage.
UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE: Proper coverage is essential when you’re involved in an accident caused by a driver who is uninsured or carrying insufficient liability limits.
LOSS SETTLEMENT BASIS: Most standard auto policies are written on an actual case value replacement basis. That typically means a “blue book” value for a car. This should never be the case for collector or high value vehicles. They should always be written on a stated or agreed value basis. This allows you to update the value as needed and eliminates any surprises in the event of a total loss.
AFTER MARKET PARTS REQUIREMENT: many insurance companies do not allow the original manufacturer parts for replacement. If you ordered a specialty set of wheels for your collector car, or your high value vehicle has specialty headlights, you should be allowed to replace those items so as to not decrease the value of the vehicle.
LOSS OF USE: If you are headed to a car show and your vehicle is in a collision, what type of coverage do you have until you can get back to your regular use vehicle?
