The recent acts of terrorism in Paris, France that took the lives of nearly 20 people have created a sense of universal concern and urgency for public safety. Islamic extremists targeted Charlie Hebdo, a satirical weekly and a Kosher deli in Paris, France killing civilians and police officers. Before the week was over mourners and supporters for freedom of speech took to the streets to express their solidarity against these acts of terrorism.
In response, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued warnings to law enforcement nationwide. Attorney General Eric Holder has stated that the possibility of a lone wolf terrorist attack, like the ones seen in Paris, France and the likes in recent history in Australia, and Canada has the potential to happen on U.S. soil.
New York City has already issued a high alert for a potential terrorist attack following threats made by the Islamic State militant group. According to the New York City Police Department, the ISIS militant group released a message that called for its followers to "rise up and kill intelligence officers, police officers, soldiers and civilians."
Terrorism has come to affect our lives in myriad ways and may no longer take the form of a large-scale coordinated attack like 9/11 but may target small business establishments, office buildings, schools and other unsuspected public places. Terrorists are now targeting violence on "soft targets," public places with minimal security yet well populated.
